SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY
Field Marshal (Nick) Houghton was the UK’s Chief of Defence Staff—the professional head of the Armed Forces—from July 2013 to July 2016.
His earlier roles were almost exclusively in operational appointments. He undertook seven operational tours of Northern Ireland and commanded the Belfast Brigade at the time of the Good Friday Agreement.
He was subsequently the UK’s Director of Military Operations and deployed as Senior British Military Representative and Deputy Commanding General, Multi-National Force – Iraq during the Iraq War.
He subsequently became Chief of Joint Operations at Permanent Joint Headquarters and served as Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff from May 2009 to July 2013 before becoming Chief of Defence Staff.
On leaving the Armed Forces, he became the Constable of the Tower of London and was made a Crossbench Peer in the House of Lords, where he serves on the International Affairs and Defence Committee.
Nick has a very active portfolio of commercial interests in defence- and security-related technology, particularly in AI, OSINT, electronic warfare, secure collaboration and autonomy.
He was recently appointed Non-Executive Chair of Defence Holdings PLC and advises Blackstone on defence-related issues. He is involved in a wide range of Service charities, including Tickets for Troops and the Not Forgotten.
In June 2025, he was appointed to the honorary rank of Field Marshal by His Majesty the King in recognition of his continued service to the nation.
