DESCRIPTION:DAME KAREN PIERCE DCMG\n\n\n\nSpeaks on\n“Should we be optimistic about America in the face of rising global uncertainty?”\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, 6th September 2025 \n….From 2020 to 2025 Dame Karen Pierce was HM Ambassador to the United States\, the first woman to hold the post and the first woman to reach 4 star level in the Diplomatic Service. \n\n\nFrom 2018 Dame Pierce was the UK’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York\, also the first women to hold that post. Prior to these roles\, Dame Pierce served as the Chief Operating Officer and then Political Director of the then FCO in London. She has also held the posts of British Ambassador to Afghanistan from 2015 to 2016\, the UK Permanent Representative to the UN and WTO in Geneva from 2012 to 2015\, and Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN in New York from 2005 to 2009.\n\nHer London-based roles at the then FCO have included the following: Policy Director for South Asia and the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan; Balkans Co-Ordinator; Deputy Head of News Department; and Head of Newsroom. Her early work covered Ukraine\, Belarus and Moldova as well as the Balkans and EU work.\n\nDame Karen Pierce DCMG is currently the UK’s Special Envoy for the Western Balkans\, based in the Foreign\, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in London. She is currently a (pro bono) member of the Board of Trustees of the National Theatre and a Governor of Ditchley. DESCRIPTION:RT HON PROFESSOR THE LORD KAKKAR KG KBE PC \n\n\n\nSpeaks on\n“NHS Reform\, Global Health Security\, Impact on Prosperity and Democracy”\n\n\n\n\nLord Kakkar is Emeritus Professor of Surgery\, University College London\, and\nPresident of the Thrombosis Research Institute in London. He is Chairman of\nKing’s Health Partners academic health sciences centre\, the Office for\nStrategic Coordination of Health Research\, the King’s Fund and UK Biobank.\nHe completed his medical degree at King’s College London and received his\nPhD from Imperial College London. His research interests include the\nprevention and treatment of venous and arterial thromboembolic disease and\ncancer-associated thrombosis. \nLord Kakkar was created a Life Peer in 2010 and sits on the cross benches of\nthe House of Lords. He has served as the Prime Minister’s Business\nAmbassador for Healthcare and Life Sciences from 2012-2018. \nAs a member of the House\, he has also served on the EU Sub Committee on\nscrutiny of the Internal Market; The Science and Technology Select\nCommittee; the Ad Hoc committee on the future sustainability of the NHS.\nHe was appointed by the Prime Minister as Chairman of the House of Lords\nAppointments Commission (2013 – 2018) and as Chairman of the Judicial\nAppointments Commission (2016-2022). \nHe has served as Chairman of The Royal Commission for the 1851 Exhibition\nsince 2022 and became Chancellor of the University of Lincoln in 2023.\nLord Kakkar was appointed a member of His Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy\nCouncil in 2014\, created a Knight Commander of the order of the British\nEmpire in 2022 and was appointed Knight Companion of the Most Noble\nOrder of The Garter by His Majesty King Charles III in 2024. \n  \n\n\n\n\nTravel Packages for overnight stay at Red Lion hotel available.
